Kunwinjku arts centre at the foot of Injalak Hill, Arnhem Land: artist studios, bark paintings and galleries of ancient rock art.

At the foot of Injalak Hill's cliffs, in the Gunbalanya community in Arnhem Land, the Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre brings together Kunwinjku painters, weavers and printers. Founded in 1986, it has become one of the main hubs for transmitting Aboriginal art from Australia's Northern Territory.

Why visit Injalak Arts

Injalak Arts is one of the rare Indigenous centres in Australie where visitors can observe artists at work in their studios, chat with them and purchase their work directly. The centre combines three dimensions: preservation of Kunwinjku cultural heritage, economic support for the Gunbalanya community, and supervised access to the rock art galleries of Injalak Hill, some of whose paintings date back thousands of years.

The experience remains intimate and demanding: visiting requires an official permit, travel timed to the tides and strict respect for community rules. This logistics naturally filters visitor numbers and preserves the quality of the encounter.

Gunbalanya's artistic heritage

Long before Europeans arrived, Arnhem Land communities practised bark painting, weaving plant fibres and engraving. In the early twentieth century, the first European researchers and collectors became interested in this art, treating it then as an ethnographic object rather than as a creative work in its own right.

A more structured market developed in the 1950s-60s, driven by Australian institutions and certain religious missions that helped spread Kunwinjku art. These networks prepared the ground for the creation of a locally-run centre.

Injalak Arts was born in 1986 from a screen-printing educational project undertaken with a group of Gunbalanya residents. Enthusiasm around printing motifs and sewing led, three years later in 1989, to the official creation of the centre, supported by the authorities. Today, around two hundred artists work there, continuing techniques passed down through generations.

What to see and do

Artist studios

At the heart of the centre, painters, weavers and printers work in the presence of visitors. Exchanges remain simple and direct: you can observe techniques, ask questions about the motifs and understand how each work fits into a family or territorial narrative.

Bark paintings

Kunwinjku art is famous for its radiographic style: the paintings reveal the internal structures of animals and characters — skeletons, organs, lines of force. These works refer to the Dreamtime stories, which form the spiritual foundation of Arnhem Land and explain the origin of the landscape, species and social laws.

Injalak Hill rock art galleries

The sandstone hill overlooking the centre is home to several rock painting sites dating back thousands of years. Guided tours led by community members provide access: the trail features rocky passages and offers a broad view over the Arnhem floodplain.

The shop

Before you leave, the centre's shop stocks bark paintings, silk-screen prints on fabric, sculptures and woven objects. Sales go directly to the artists and the community.

Planning your visit

Access permit

Gunbalanya lies in Aboriginal territory. A recreation permit issued by the Northern Land Council is mandatory to visit. Applications are made online before your trip and are usually processed quickly.

Opening hours

The centre is open on weekdays, typically Monday to Friday during the day, and closed on weekends and public holidays. Hours may vary: check the official website before you come.

Photography and purchases

Photographing artists at work requires their explicit consent. Card payments are generally accepted at the shop, but bring an alternative in case of network failure.

When to go

The dry season, April to October, is the recommended period: passable roads, more moderate temperatures and guaranteed access to Cahill's Crossing. The wet season, November to March, makes tracks slippery or flooded and may cut access to Gunbalanya for several days.

How to get there

Access is from Jabiru, in Kakadu National Park. Allow approximately 50 minutes' drive to Gunbalanya. A few points to plan for:

  • A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, particularly after rainfall.
  • Follow signs to Oenpelli, cross Cahill's Crossing, then continue straight to a T-junction where you turn right. The centre is in a long building on the left of the road.
  • Cahill's Crossing is subject to tides. Check tidal times before departure: the crossing may be impassable or dangerous at high tide.

What to see in the region

The visit fits naturally into an itinerary through the heart of the Northern Territory, around Kakadu National Park: Ubirr and Nourlangie rock art sites, Jim Jim Falls, wildlife observation from the billabongs near Jabiru. To extend your discovery of Australian wildlife, Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin allows you to get close to the region's iconic saltwater crocodiles.
