Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
At Taranna on Tasman Peninsula, the Unzoo offers the chance to observe Tasmanian devils and other native species in semi-freedom, within an active conservation programme.
On Tasman Peninsula, at Taranna, Tasmanian Devil Unzoo adopts a radically different model from traditional zoos: animals roam semi-freely in their natural habitat, and it is the visitor who adapts to them. The Tasmanian devil, an endangered species and emblem of the state, lies at the heart of an active conservation programme. The site also welcomes other Australian native species within a setting of authentic bushland.

What to see
The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is undoubtedly the star: a carnivorous marsupial, it is known for its powerful jaws and distinctive cries. The site also hosts wallabies, wombats, quolls and various native bird species. Spacious enclosures and free-roaming zones allow for close-range observations.
History and context
The Tasmanian devil disappeared from mainland Australia around 3,000 years ago, surviving only in Tasmania. Since the 1990s, a contagious facial tumour disease (DFTD) has decimated wild populations. The Unzoo actively participates in captive breeding and reintroduction programmes coordinated nationwide to preserve the species.
Highlights of your visit
Devil presentations
Guided sessions allow observation of devils during feeding. Keepers explain their biology, social behaviour and conservation challenges. This is the most opportune moment to see them in action.
Wallaby encounters
Free-roaming wallabies circulate around the site and willingly accept visitor presence. A rare up-close experience, with no barriers or fencing.
The bushland trail
A walking trail crosses the peninsula's native vegetation. Interpretive panels about local fauna and flora line the path.
Photography tips
Soft morning and late afternoon light suits photography of moving animals best. Devils are dark-coloured: opt for higher ISO sensitivity indoors within enclosures. Avoid flash, which disturbs the animals. Free-roaming wallabies offer the best opportunities in natural light.
Location and access
Taranna sits on the Arthur Highway, approximately 80 km south-east of Hobart and a few kilometres north of the Port Arthur Historic Site. Car is the most practical transport option. Some organised tours from Hobart include the Unzoo in a combined circuit with Port Arthur.
Nearby
- Port Arthur Historic Site — former colonial prison listed as world heritage, a few kilometres to the south.
- Tasman National Park — spectacular cliffs, coastal hikes and dolerite arches at the peninsula's tip.
- Eaglehawk Neck — narrow isthmus with remarkable geological formations (Tessellated Pavement, Blowhole).
Frequently asked questions
The site is open year-round. Australasian spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) offer pleasant temperatures. During Tasmanian summer (December-February), the days are long, favouring observations in late afternoon.
Yes, the two sites are close on the Arthur Highway. Plan a full day: 2 to 3 hours at the Unzoo in the morning, then Port Arthur in the afternoon. Port Arthur also offers night-time visits.
Free-roaming wallabies may approach visitors spontaneously. Direct contact with Tasmanian devils is not permitted for safety and animal welfare reasons.
Car is the most practical option: allow around 1 hour 15 minutes from Hobart via the A9 and Arthur Highway. Organised tours from Hobart sometimes include the Unzoo in their itinerary.
Photography is allowed throughout the site. Flash use is discouraged near animals. Check with keepers for any restrictions during presentations.
