Strahan

·

On Tasmania's west coast, Strahan opens the door to the Tasmanian Wilderness: Gordon River cruise, Sarah Island and pristine nature.

On the shores of the vast Macquarie Harbour, Strahan is a serene village where history, nature and maritime atmosphere converge. Its isolated setting, typical of Tasmania's west coast, makes it an ideal departure point for exploring one of the island's most untamed regions. Here, you move to the rhythm of the wind, rainforests and calm waters that embrace this small, welcoming port.

Strahan's History

Long before European arrival, the shores of Macquarie Harbour were home to the Toogee Aboriginal people for nearly 35,000 years. Explorer James Kelly reached the area in 1815, initiating a period marked by navigation, shipbuilding and the establishment of penal colonies, notably Sarah Island, renowned for its extreme isolation.

Founded in 1877, Strahan became a key port for timber exploitation and tin transport from Mount Heemskirk. The railway connection to Queenstown strengthened its strategic role in western Tasmania. In the 1980s, the region played a major part in environmental movements that led to lasting protection of its wilderness.

Strahan Today

Today, Strahan is a coastal village of around 650 inhabitants, animated by fishing, aquaculture and nature-focused tourism. The town centre remains unpretentious and welcoming, with a vibrant waterfront, intimate accommodation options and excursions that allow you to appreciate the west coast at a leisurely pace. The town succeeds in preserving its maritime identity while offering privileged access to some of Tasmania's most unspoilt landscapes.

Nature and Wildlife Around Strahan

Surrounding the village, temperate rainforest descends to the dark banks of the Gordon River, where Huon pines and Leatherwood blend with dense vegetation. To the west, the Henty dunes form a shifting landscape sculpted by the winds. The region is also home to discreet yet remarkable wildlife: platypuses, sea eagles, dolphins, wallabies and little penguins at dusk. A pristine environment where nature reveals itself with patience and wonder.
